Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a mental disorder that commonly occurs in children. It is characterized by difficulty in controlling impulses.  The three main symptoms of ADHD are impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention.

Hyperactivity is described as being always energetic. In children, this is observed through restlessness. One will notice that kids will ADHD run a lot. They move a lot and it is difficult to keep them still. Kids with ADHD will often be seen playing and touching everything they can lay their hands on.  Impulsivity, on the other hand, is characterized by failure to think of something before acting. This means there is no restraint in a kid’s action. This is often observed in people who just blurt out comments without thinking how these comments will affect others. Another very observable behavior regarding impulsivity is the impulse to take things away from other kids without regard. They may even hit other kids when they are upset.

Inattention, on the other hand, is described or characterized by a behavior in which the child or kid easily gets bored. This happens most of the time when the child is being taught something new. The kid does not have problems paying attention if the activity is something he really enjoys.

The treatment of ADHD is available through medication, counseling, and therapy. With the support and understanding of the people around the child, ADHD can be very much improved. Studies have been taken time and again to find new ways of treating ADHD and see if these treatments are effective for all age brackets affected with the mental disorder. One treatment that is widely used for kids in the pre-school age is medication. However, before this is done, it has to be ensured that the children have no allergic reactions to the medications because it will bring more damage. A child’s reaction to the medicine must be studied carefully and it must be stopped if the child shows any sign that the medicine is causing bad reactions in his body.

Stimulants are known to be the best medicine for ADHD treatments. However, not all stimulants are suited for all age brackets. These medications should never be consumed without the prescription of a qualified physician. In most cases, ampethamine is used for children with ADHD above three years of age. For kids more than six years of age, methylphenidate is prescribed.

Just recently, the FDA or Food and Drug Commission passed an approval for a medication for ADHD which does not fall under the stimulant category. This targets the neurotransmitters of the brain and reduces the showing of symptoms of ADHD. It is observed that not all prescribed medications will bring the same satisfactory results to users. It was noted that some people have a different reaction to different medicines. Some medicines work better and some not for each individual. Sometimes, different people also need different dosages in the treatment of ADHD.

In summary, drug treatment is applicable only once a diagnosis is complete. Treatment of ADHD should never be taken by the hands of an untrained person as these medicines may wreak havoc in the patient’s life instead of improving it.
