A kind of learning disability that is commonly characterized by difficulty in learning or comprehension of written or printed stuff but the symptoms of which vary from one individual to another is called dyslexia.

The problem with dyslexia is that it is a life long disability that cannot be cured in the medical sense of the term, and dyslexic children will grow up into dyslexic adults.

The hardest part is that sometimes an individual has to reach adulthood before being diagnosed with dyslexia and he might have spent his entire formative period without any knowledge of his dyslexic condition. Doctors and psychiatrists haven’t yet been able to pinpoint any exact cause behind dyslexia but different types of theories have been put forward which I am going to list here.

Genetic and neurobiological cause of dyslexia
Often it has been noticed that if there is a family history of dyslexia with a very close blood relative being dyslexic in the past such as aunt or uncle or cousin or sibling or parent or grandparent, an individual will develop dyslexia. Thus there is strong ground to believe that some people have a genetic predisposition towards dyslexia.

Brain development
When the brain does not develop fully due to lack of migration of neurons or nerve cells to the proper location where they are supposed to remain, it hampers the total development of the brain and in turn causes learning disabilities like dyslexia.

Hearing problems in early age
If a child right from its infancy experiences hearing problem, he/she won’t get to know about the proper sounds and pronunciations of each letter and word and the connection between the two, so vital for effective communication, won’t be established in the brain.

Since the brain has not been trained in the recognition of letters and words and their corresponding sounds, reading, spelling out words correctly, comprehension of a passage will remain an uphill task for the child. He will stumble at each word; get confused between rhyming words or letters which look similar.

Another theory suggests the cause as crossed wiring where a dyslexic child is heavily dependent on the right side of the brain. Other theorists opine that dyslexia is caused because of a combination of a number of the above mentioned theories.
