Researchers and psychiatrists often find it difficult to define stress as it involves a highly subjective phenomenon which usually differs from people to people. What can distress one individual can destress another. The way different people respond to stress also varies.

Because of stress, one individual can start binging while another will stop eating. Below I will list a few common emotional and physical effects of stress.
A person suffering from stress will experience pain or jaw clenching, frequent headaches, he will grind or grit his teeth, he may stammer or stutter, his hands and lips will tremble and he will experience tremors, there might be muscle spasms, back pain or neck ache, dizziness, feeling faint and lightheaded accompanied by a buzzing or ringing or popping sound.

A stressed out individual tends to sweat and blush, his hands turn clammy and cold from sweat as do his feet. Either he will suffer from insomnia or he will get disturbed sleep punctured many times during the night by nightmares or fearful dreams and he/she may restlessly toss and turn on the bed all night.

Some other people, to overcome stress, often sleep for abnormally longer hours to run away or escape from their problems. A very common effect of stress will be difficulty in concentration and difficulty in reining in a thousand thoughts that race through the mind. These people will also find it difficult to learn something new.

Other effects are confusion, mental haziness, disorganization and forgetfulness, inability to take sound decisions, always burdened by a feeling of being overwhelmed or overloaded, entertaining suicidal thoughts and frequently bursting out crying, feeling oppressed by a sense of worthlessness and loneliness, finding little interest in one’s own appearance or work, a thoroughly punctual and dutiful person may become irregular and irresponsible, there might be increased feelings of edginess, irritability and frustration, the individual will display nervous habits like tapping of feet or fidgeting with something.

Some common physical effects displayed will be flatulence, excess belching, nausea, stomach pain, heartburn, attacks of allergy that will be frequent or unexplained, accompanied by goosebumps, hives, itching and rashes.
