Most people have this notion that irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are one and the same.

This can prove problematic when it comes to canine care because the two terms are very much dissimilar. Many dog owners have fallen prey to this misconception and, as a consequence, have given their pets the wrong treatment. It is important that the right information be obtained before any diagnosis concerning irritable bowel syndrome canine.

Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS causes several symptoms, including bloating, gas, cramping, constipation, and diarrhea. IBS is not a disease but a functional disorder in the bowel. The “I” in IBS stands for irritable because a dog that suffers from the syndrome has extra-sensitive muscles and nerves in the bowel. The muscles may contract too much upon eating, causing diarrhea or cramping after every meal, or the nerves can react too strongly to the stretching of the bowel, causing constipation or frequent gassing. While IBS can indeed be painful, it does not cause any other disease on the sufferer.

On the other hand, inflammatory bowel disease or IBD is a chronic inflammatory disease that hits the gastrointestinal tract, including parts such as the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. If not handled or managed the right way, it can easily result to serious canine health issues and even death. The predominant inflammatory cell type, plus plasma cells and lymphocytes, prove a chronic stimulation in the dog’s immune system. Surgical biopsy or endoscopic examination is vital in giving the right diagnosis.

Irritable bowel syndrome, simply called as IBS, is a functional bowel disorder in which the intestines of the person affected either squeeze too hard or just not hard enough, causing food to either move too quickly or too slowly in the intestines.

IBS is more common in women and normally starts at the young age of 20. While IBS has no permanent cure, there are treatments that can relieve the disorder’s symptoms. One of the most effective of these treatments is making appropriate changes in irritable bowel syndrome diet.

Dietary adjustments can be very helpful in dealing with IBS. People with IBS tend to suffer more when they eat the wrong kinds of food, so making informed choices can really make things better. There are different changes in irritable bowel syndrome diet a patient can make. The regular intake of foods and supplements with soluble fiber is recommended, along with the effective reduction or avoidance of dairy products, solid chocolate, fatty or oily fried products, fruits and vegetables with too much insoluble fiber, red meat, caffeine, carbonated drinks, and alcohol.

Fiber is the most trusted ingredient in relieving the symptoms of IBS. This is because fiber makes stool soft easy to remove, reducing the event of constipation, pain, and discomfort. Breads, beans, cereals, and certain foods and vegetables can provide the proper amount of fiber needed to ease away IBS symptoms. Switching to small, frequent meals from large, less frequent meals helps in alleviating diarrhea and abdominal pain, which are also common symptoms of IBS.

Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as IBS, is a functional bowel syndrome that is commonly characterized by cramps, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and irregularities in bowel habits.

While this particular bowel disorder has no known cure, its symptoms can be treated with a number of things, including alterations in diet, stress relief, and medication.

Medications for irritable bowel syndrome usually consist of laxatives and stool softeners for the relief of constipation, which is a dominant IBS symptom, and anti-diarrheals for the relief of diarrhea, another major IBS symptom. Examples of irritable bowel syndrome drugs for diarrhea are opioid or opioid analogs like codeine, diphenoxylate, or loperamide.

One of the leading triggers of irritable bowel syndrome is lack of fiber. Fiber helps in making stool soft and easy to remove, and lack of it results in constipation. However, some IBS patients have negative reactions when more levels of fiber are added to their diet. Osmotic agents like lactulose, polyethylene glycol, and sorbitol are prescribed to sufferers of IBS who have problems responding well to dietary fiber.

Antipasmodics are also effective irritable bowel syndrome drugs for the relief of diarrhea and/or cramps. Antispasmodics may be neurotropics like atropine or musculotropics like mebeverine; they are also available in addition to barbiturates or tranquilizers, but combination therapies have no established value.

There are some drugs that affect the serotonin (5-HT) in the intestines, and these irritable bowel syndrome drugs have been reported to help reduce IBS symptoms. Agonists relieve constipation, while antagonists relieve diarrhea.

Probiotics can be very helpful in dealing with IBS. Probiotics are beneficial live microorganisms that reside in your digestive tract. They help maintain a healthy digestive system by decreasing the growth of harmful bacteria. Probiotics are often called “good bacteria” because of their health benefits. Many Americans take probiotics to aid digestion or to treat conditions such as diarrhea, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease and yeast infections. Many health food stores carry probiotics as dietary supplements, but they are also available in certain foods.

Yogurt and Kefir Some popular yogurt brands contain probiotics. For example, Dannon’s Activia contains Bifidobacterium animalis, a probiotic that speeds digestion. When shopping for yogurt, look for products that feature the words “live” or “active” on the package. This means that the product contains living and active bacteria, which will promote digestive health.

The probiotics in yogurt include Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus thermophilus and bifidobacteria. Kefir is a creamy dairy drink similar to yogurt. It contains probiotics not usually found in yogurt, such as Lactobacillus caucasus.

Especially this Lactobacillus Caucasus is helping to relief the colon and is a great help with people having IBS.

Irritable bowel syndrome, simply referred to as IBS, is known in gastroenterology as a functional bowel disorder that may begin after the person affected has had an infection or underwent a traumatic or stressful life event.

IBS is said to exist more often with other functional disorders and psychological conditions.

Women are more likely to suffer from IBS, which can start to manifest itself when the person is only 20 years old. But no matter what gender or age, irritable bowel syndrome symptoms are similar among patients. IBS is characterized by mild to severe abdominal discomfort or pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea after meals or early in the morning, constipation, mucus in the stool, alteration of bowel habits, a strong urge to remove bowels, and a feeling of having to remove bowels again after just doing so.

Since IBS is usually also present in people with functional disorders and psychological conditions, other symptoms may also manifest themselves. These symptoms can be in the form of other medical conditions, which may or may not actually be related to IBS. Such conditions include mild infections, parasitic infections such as giardiasis, celiac disease, functional chronic constipation, functional abdominal pain, and a host of inflammatory bowel diseases.

IBS is a tricky disease because it has no cure and no known exact cause. Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms are relieved through a combination of treatments, including medication, dietary adjustments, meditation, and techniques and activities for fighting stress. If symptoms persist, psychological intervention is recommended, as well as a second opinion or a more serious treatment.

Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a functional bowel syndrome that attacks the intestines and causes problems in bowel movement. People who suffer from IBS usually experience a wide variety of symptoms, including abdominal pain or discomfort, diarrhea, constipation, mucus-filled stool, unexplainable feeling of wanting to go again right after bowel movement, and other changes in bowel habits.

One fact that people need to know about irritable bowel syndrome is that it has no know exact cause and no cure. However, while IBS cannot be cured – for the time being, as hoped – it can very well be treated. There are several treatments that can be done in order to help relieve symptoms of the disorder in IBS patients, including dietary changes or adjustments, medication, and stress relief. The usual and most effective irritable bowel syndrome treatment is the combination of these three.

Changes or alterations in diet have proved helpful in relieving IBS symptoms. Patients need to be informed of the foods that can worsen their condition and those that can ease it. The right amount of fiber is essential in keeping abdominal pain and constipation away; meanwhile, oily and fatty foods, dairy products, chocolates, alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks are triggers of IBS symptoms.

As for medication, laxatives and antispasmodics deal with diarrhea and colon spasms; antidepressants are prescribed for patients who also suffer from depressions along with IBS. IBS patients are also taught how meditate and handle stressful situations since stress is known to worsen symptoms.
