Prostate cancer is the disease which affects the prostate glands. These glands are a part of the male reproductive organs and so only men are vulnerable to this disease. Aged men are more prone to this disease as many hormonal changes take place in the body after fifty years which leads to the growth of malignant cells in the prostate glands.Mostly the growth rate of the cancerous cells is so slow that it becomes very difficult to detect the disease. But in the last two decades the patients suffering from prostate cancer have been able to get the proper treatment.

This has been possible due to constant research that is going on in this field. Though the causes of prostate cancer have not been found but it is felt that there are some factors which may cause prostate cancer and if proper precaution is taken then this problem can be avoided. It has also been discovered that if the disease is detected at an early stage and the proper mode of treatment is adopted in consultation with the doctor then the patient can be completely cured. So it is essential to know the symptoms of this disease which can lead to early detection.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms

It is quite difficult to detect the symptoms of prostate cancer as the symptoms appear only at the advanced stage of the disease. The main symptoms that are observed is in the advanced stage when the urethra is under pressure as the swollen glands affect the normal functioning of the urethra. The main functioning that is affected is the urinary system and the patient will have a constant urge of urinating especially at night which also leads to sleeplessness. The flow of the urine is minimal which makes the person feel that the bladder has not been emptied completely.

There may be blood flow with urine in some extreme cases but this symptom can be caused by other urinary disease. The sexual desire declines and even if the intercourse takes place the ejaculation is very painful. The other symptoms are pain during urination and erection problem even if there is a desire. Sometimes the urge for urinating may be very strong but while urinating only dribbling of few drops of urine may occur.

Prostate cancer is curable if it is detected in the early stages when it is located within a particular area inside the prostate glands. The most common mode of treating this disease in the initial stage is surgery where the operation is done on the prostate glands and only that part of the prostate gland is removed which is affected by the cancerous cells. Many times though it has been observed that the malignant cells are not localized but have spread to other tissues within the prostate glands or affects the nerves or the urethra then the removal of the prostate glands is essential.

Prostate Cancer Surgery

Prostate cancer surgery is also known prostatectomy which is performed in three ways. The open surgery which is the oldest form of surgery and the operation is done in the traditional way. The lower abdomen is marked for incision to get easy access to the prostate glands. The common surgical methods are used for removing the prostate glands. Open surgery is mostly done in those cases where the disease has spread to the tissues which are in the surrounding area of the glands or when the size of the affected gland is so big that it cannot be removed by any other means.

Another method of prostate cancer surgery is the laparoscopic surgery where instruments for lighting and surgery are inserted in the affected area through small incisions that are made in the lower abdomen. In this way the affected area in the gland is located on the video and removed or if the disease has spread then the prostate glands are removed. But there is a major problem with the laparoscopic and the open surgery and that is during the surgery damage may be caused to the nerves which can later on lead to problems in normal sexual functioning.

The latest technique that has been developed in surgery is the robotic surgery which will help in avoiding the problem of damaging the nerves and help the person to lead a normal life after surgery. So this type of prostate cancer surgery is also called nerve sparing surgery. It depends on the patient which type of surgery he wants to opt for because any type of surgery has its after effects so the patient should discuss with the doctor and his family before choosing to undergo surgery.

Prostate cancer affects the prostate glands of males due to many reasons. The exact cause of the disease has not been found till date. So if a person is detected with prostate cancer he feels that there is no other way out and he has to survive the remaining part of his life on medicines. But this is not the case as a person who is suffering from prostate cancer can lead a healthy life by bringing in a few changes in his eating habits which will help his body to regain the strength and energy that is being drained through the medicines that is being given to treat the disease.

Prostate Cancer Diet

Constant research is going on to find out the ways and means which will help a person suffering from prostate cancer to heal quickly along with the medical treatment. It has been discovered that following a particular diet plan along with some exercises as advised by the doctor, according to the health condition, can help in curing the disease quickly and avoid recurrence of the disease. A person suffering from this disease should take a diet that has low fat like boneless lean meat, chicken or turkey meat without the skin.

The person should avoid fried foods or any type of food that has saturated fat. The daily diet should contain lots of vegetables and fruits especially vegetables that are dark green as they have high iron content and orange fruits which will act as anti oxidants. The patient should also include vitamins in his diet which can be taken in the form of pills prescribed by the doctor. To prepare a balanced and nutritious diet plan it is also essential to include legumes and dairy products that are low in fat. Soy and soy products can also be included in the diet.

Besides this there are varieties of diets which can help in the prevention of prostate cancer. The diet which includes whole grains and sea vegetables not only help in preventing prostate cancer but can also reverse the effects of the disease. The persons who are susceptible to this disease should always eat a low fat diet so that they can avoid obesity which is also believed to be a cause of this cancer.

Diagnosis is the system of detecting a disease so that proper treatment can be done by the doctor who provides the necessary medicine and advices about the other precautionary measures so that the patient can be cured completely. Diagnosis is mostly done on the basis of the symptoms that is present in most of the disease but prostate cancer does not have any kind of symptoms so males who are fifty and above should get their check up done monthly to eliminate any chances of this disease. A blood test is also done during these routine check ups to diagnose prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

The routine check up may lead to the diagnosis of prostate cancer but special emphasis is laid on checking those males who have a family history of this disease or persons who are obese and show some signs and symptoms related to this disease then the doctor may try to find out about the regular problems the patient is facing related to his daily urinary system that is whether the urge for urination has increased or decreased and the other problems that the patient faces during urinating. This disease can also be diagnosed while check up is going on for other illnesses.

The other methods of diagnosing prostate cancer are biopsy, trans-rectal ultrasonography and cystoscopy. These methods of diagnosis are used when the doctor feels during the routine check up or other kinds of check ups for some other disease that there are chances of the person suffering from prostate cancer. The basic method that is applied to diagnose prostate cancer is the examination which is done through the rectum and is known as digital rectal examination. Antigen tests that are specifically meant for this disease are also done for diagnosing the disease.

The digital rectal test and the antigen test should be done together for the diagnosis of prostate cancer as this will help in getting a more accurate result than each test done separately. In the digital rectal test the doctor uses his gloved finger which he passes into the anus to detect any kind of unusual growth on the inner wall of the rectum. This is one way of feeling the rear wall of the prostate.

Prostate cancer affects men all over the world but this disease is still shrouded in mystery as the causes and the symptoms are still undetected. Some of the symptoms which are connected with this disease can be caused due to other kind of disease that has affected the urethra or the bladder or due to some kind of urinary infection. So if a person feels any kind of discomfort during urination or develops an urge of urinating frequently he should immediately consult a doctor and get all the check ups done to eliminate any doubt about prostate cancer.

Before discussing in detail about prostate cancer it is essential to know some basic facts about this disease. Prostate cancer affects the prostate glands which is a small gland which forms a part of the reproductive organs in men. This gland is in the shape of a walnut and helps the flow of the semen during ejaculation by providing the fluid to the semen. The malignant growth in the tissues of this gland is known as prostate cancer. Normally the growth of these malignant tissues is very slow and remains within the prostate gland which can be cured if it is detected in its early stage.

Metastatic Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer normally affect men who are aged that is fifty years or above. So it is essential that a person who is fifty years or above should have annual check ups if he wants to eliminate any kind of disease especially prostate cancer. Medically the disease is divided into four stages; in the first stage the cancer is located only in the prostate. The second stage is that stage where the cancer is advancing but has not spread outside the prostate glands. In the third stage the cancerous cells affect the tissues outside the prostate.

The fourth stage is the metastatic stage where the malignant cells spread to other parts of the body especially the bones. This stage is also known as the advanced stage for which there is no treatment the only option that is available is to stop the growth of the cells with the help of surgery or chemotherapy along with the follow up treatments so that the pain and the discomforts can be reduced.

Research is continuously going on to find out the mode of treatment which will help to cure prostate cancer and provide relief from the suffering and pain that is caused by this disease as it not only affects the life of the person who is suffering from this disease but also has its implications on the family members. Prostate cancer is normally found in aging men who have reached the age of fifty years or above. Mostly this disease remains undetected as it develops very slowly and does not have any notable symptoms which can help in diagnosing the disease.

Recent Research Results

The modern research teams have also turned their attention towards finding out about the food items that not only help in curing prostate cancer but can also act as a preventive measure to avoid the attack of prostate cancer. It has been discovered that lycopene which is a natural antioxidant is very effective in curing prostate cancer. Lycopene is an antioxidant which is taken by people as it works as an anti ageing element and is also helpful in curing many types of heart disease and for fighting against other types of cancer.

Lycopene and Prostate Cancer

The antioxidant lycopene is available in abundance in tomatoes. As this helps to fight against many types of ailments it is recommended that consumption of tomatoes increases the level of lycopene in the blood and helps in the prevention of prostate cancer. Researchers have also found that the lycopene which is found in the cells of the tomatoes can be absorbed easily by the human body if the tomatoes are consumed in the processed form as the released cooking or the processing releases the lycopene from the cells of the tomatoes.

Lycopene helps in reducing the high level of antigen that is specific to prostate and the main cause of prostate cancer. Reduction in the level of this antigen not only helps in preventing prostate cancer but is also helpful in curing the disease as it restricts the growth of the malignant cells in the prostate glands. Besides tomatoes lycopene is also found in pink grapefruit, watermelon and spaghetti sauce.

Prostate cancer affects only males as the cancer cells grow in the prostate glands which is a major part of the male reproductive organs. The prostrate gland which supplies the fluid along with the semen during ejaculation is located near the urethra and just under the urinary bladder. Though the actual cause of prostate cancer has not been found still to date, it has been observed that married men are more prone to this cancer than bachelors. Men who are above fifty years of age are also vulnerable to this disease.

Other Causes of Prostate Cancer

The other factors which are considered to be the cause of prostate cancer are obesity due to accumulation of fat in the body, mineral deficiency especially the deficiency of zinc in the body of men, hormonal imbalance which mostly takes place in aged men or may be caused by stress, tension and anxiety or it may also be genetic that is it can be inherited by the son from the father. The deficiency of testosterone can cause this disease because due to this deficiency the production of estrogen increases which leads to the development of the cancerous cells.

Prostate Cancer Treatment

The growth of the cancerous cells starts in the glandular tissues that are found in the prostate glands. If the disease is detected in the initial stage then there is a great chance of curing the disease. But mostly it is observed that the disease is detected at a later stage and there are different types of treatments for the disease. The most common treatment is surgery where the prostrate glands and the tissues that are in the surrounding area are removed. Another mode of treatment is the radiation therapy.

It is done externally by directing the beam of radiation with high energy on a particular target inside the body. Hormonal therapy treatment can also be given which is called the therapy of androgen deprivation which reduces the level of androgens in the body and restricts the growth of the maligned cells. Hormone therapy is mostly used for those patients who suffer from recurrence of the disease after treatment with radiation therapy or surgery. Chemotherapy can also be used for the treatment of prostate cancer.
