Lyme disease is caused by bacteria known as spirochete and these bacteria are found in ticks which normally survive in the stomach of animals like deer so it is also known as the illness caused by the deer tick.

Spirochete is the name used in US but the real name of the bacteria is Borrelia burgdorferi.

The bacteria Borrelia afzelii is the cause of lyme disease in the European countries. The disease spreads when the tick bites human beings on the skin which helps the bacteria to infect the body as the bacteria is transferred through the bite onto the skin of human beings.

Lyme disease does not become an epidemic as it is not contagious disease which can be passed on from one human being to another through any type of direct or indirect contact. The deer tick can pass on the bacteria to humans only if it gets the chance to stay on the human body for at least thirty six to forty eight hours. So this disease can be easily avoided in those areas where the infected deer tick are found if daily checking of the whole body is done by the living in that area, but sometimes the size of the ticks is so small that it cannot be easily located.

Lyme Disease Facts
Lyme disease was discovered in 1975 in Lyme, Connecticut when some of the mothers who lived in the same area took their children to the doctors with the same complaint that was rheumatoid arthritis which was a surprise to the doctors which led to research about the matter as it was quite unusual that the children of the same area was suffering from the same disease at the same time. The researchers found out that the problem was caused by bacteria and later on they discovered that the bacteria was carried by the deer ticks.

As this disease was discovered in Lyme so in 1982 the disease was named as lyme disease. The number of cases related to this disease depends totally on the amount of infected deer ticks found in that area.

This disease has also been found in China, Australia, Japan and Europe. It is also found in some parts of the Soviet Union. The highest numbers of cases are located in US as it has been discovered that all the fifty states have people who are suffering from Lyme disease.
