One more important aspect in Pilates must be noted. It is concerned with mats used for exercises. As in the case of Yoga, Pilates practitioners also use a mat. However, we will see here the significant difference between a Yoga and Pilates mat. In the first instance Pilates mat must be thicker, at least half an inch thick. Yoga mats are generally not that thick and need not be that thick either. Pilates Mat must not be soft.

For the exercises to be effectively done, there must be firmness in the surface of the mat. A thin or soft mat would be unsuitable. It may also be remembered that during standing postures during Yoga practice, a feel of the ground by the feet is good while such stipulation is not necessary for the Pilates mat.

It should also be borne in mind that the Pilates mat should be 72” – 86” long and 21” -36” wide. This will give a comfortable ambience. Mats made up of dense foam or rubber made an ideal material for Pilates mat which can be rolled up as well. Dense foam or rubber material will assure appropriate thickness.

An example may be cited regarding the correct utility of a Pilates Mat for doing an exercise. This will clarify the position. Single-leg stretch exercise is helpful for maintaining a fit abdomen. And when a circular motion I made the mind should not be burdened with the anxiety regarding the possible disruption of the mat which is likely to occur in case of a thin or unsuitable material mat. While preparing to inhale and out hale and while preparing for the circular movement of the leg stretch the mind should be absolutely steady and free from any care or anxiety. This is possible when the thickness of the mat is assured. This is even more important when one has to maintain upper bode curve in a proper position.

It may also be mentioned that judicious and proper use of Pilate Mat enables the performer to effectively do the stretching basics, single leg kick, double leg stretch and single leg stretch modified in a very neat and proper manner. Due credit then must be given to the silent helper, namely, the mat for these exercises to be done properly.
