This is what post traumatic stress disorder often results in. Usually people who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder feel that they can never return to normal life but if they seek treatment, the symptoms will be overcome sooner or later.
Any kind of overwhelming life experience or traumatic event that can or has threatened an individual’s sense of safety and made him feel helpless can snowball into a disorder that is called PTSD. It is mostly associated with soldiers who are battle scarred.
In fact among men who suffer from PTSD, the most common cause is military combat. Uncontrollable and unpredictable traumatic events can also trigger PTSD.
Usually people who have been through catastrophic events and are now trying to resurrect their lives or those who have witnessed such events like law enforcement officers and emergency workers or near and dear ones of those who are trying to give support to the actual sufferer go through PTSD.
Causes of post traumatic stress disorder
Medical procedures, especially if kids undergo operations or similar things, physical or sexual abuse, violent assault, kidnapping, plane crash or car crash, natural disasters like earthquakes or tsunamis or floods or famines or volcanoes, rape and the atrocities of war are the common causes of post traumatic stress disorder.
Post traumatic stress disorder can also be caused when an individual reexperiences that fateful traumatic event he/she may display or experience sweating or muscle tension or nausea or rapid breathing or pounding heart, feelings of intense distress at a reminder of the trauma, related nightmares during sleep, a sense of déjà vu or flashbacks and intrusive memories of that horrible event that again thoroughly upsets the individual.
These kinds of people will start avoiding feelings or thoughts or places or activities that can trigger off memories of the trauma and cause post traumatic stress disorder and they will often forget vital aspects or incidents of the traumatic event and lose interest in life and normal activities and work and hobbies. They will also feel emotionally numb, distance themselves from others and feel oppressed by a sense of limited future.
