
In modern times, when the whole world has become super competitive, ruthless and insensitive, where everyone has to participate in a rat race and has to win in order to survive, where existential crisis is a part and parcel of everybody’s lives, stress is a household phenomenon.
The word stress may be defined as a biological condition or a psychological condition where extra pressure, extra force, extra strain, extra tension, excessive worries and anxieties are thrown at an individual’s head due to circumstances or because of stressors (causes of stress) and with which he finds difficult to cope.
A person under stress will display symptoms like irritability, nervousness, fidgeting, withdrawal symptoms, isolation from people and friends and relatives, inability to concentrate, lack of interest in his work, hobby and whole of life. Often these people complain of dizziness, feeling faint, binging or undereating, insomnia or oversleeping, they take to boozing, smoking, substance abuse etc.
There is a very close connection between stress and mental depression. Those people who suffer from chronic stress or are constantly exposed to stressful situations or stress inducing situations and those who cannot really cope with stress, often succumb and fall prey to depression and become melancholic.
But you would be surprised to know that even stress and stress related depression or melancholy can instigate people to do really wonderful things surmounting all kinds of odds and create masterpieces.
Almost all poets, dramatists, bards, songwriters, filmmakers, directors and other such people involved with the creative world have led extremely stressful, unhappy and melancholic lives and these are what had driven them to create wonderful pieces of art.
Even Erin Brokovich, immortalized by Julia Roberts on screen, fought against stress brought on by a hostile surrounding and succeeded in achieving an extraordinary feat by forcing Pacific Gas and Electric to pay up compensation amounting to $333 million.
If you want to clear cobwebs from your thought patterns and mind, a bit of stress often helps. Thus as you can see, everything about stress is not bad, it also has its positive sides and when channelized in the right direction can help us to evolve into better superior human beings.
